Spring 2015 (Red) - Increase Driving Age

Proposition

You say that the driving age should be increased, but I disagree with that. Driving age should not be increased for many reasons. If you are raising the age it won't make a difference because it depends on the experience not age. Once it is changed to 18 year olds instead of 16 then the deaths will change to 18 year olds because now the 16 year olds that are driving wont be. According to A. J. Rox and the article Driving age should not be Raised, it says that “Sixteen-year old drivers crash mostly because inexperience. If the driving age is raised then 18 year olds will also crash because of inexperience. This means that the death rate of 18 year olds will increase.” Therefore there is really no reason at all for changing the driving age because it won’t help teenagers for doing it.

Statistics show that teen drivers have a crash rate three times those who are at least twenty years of age and older according to IIHSHLDI. Teens that don't get in car crashes are teens who know what the laws are and know what they're doing, but they might also be driving with dangers in the back seat

According to http://susvalleypolicy.org/ A teen claims that your drivers permits just allow you to drive, It doesn’t mean you have the necessary skills to drive your just allowed too. According to http://articles.mcall.com/ Kids will have more time to learn about the skill of driving if the age to get your license is pushed back to age 18

You guys might say that the driving age should stay where it is, but I think it should be raised because the roads would be safer without immature 16 year old's, they have access to phones and are at a higher risk of hurting themselves and others due to phones. therefore the age should be raised.

Side: Proposition

I believe that increasing the driving age would be a good idea because it would reduce the number of teenagers dying. According to the Center of Disease Control, they reported traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for American teenagers, a third of all deaths in that age group. Some people may say that raising the driving age wouldn't decrease the number of teenagers dying from accidents but, in 2011, about 2,650 teens in the United States aged 16–19 were killed and almost 292,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes. That means that seven teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries. Young people ages 15-24 represent only 14% of the U.S. population. However, they account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females. Therefore, it is true that if we raise the driving age, less teens will die.

To go along with my post earlier that teenagers are very immature, in 2013 only 55% percent of high school students say that they always wear their seat belts. With teenagers driving as fast as they do as well as not wearing a seat belts, they can be very dangerous to others and themselves. (Teen Drivers: Get the Facts, CDC, pg.1)

I think that the driving age should be raised to 18. According center for disease and control 16 to 19 year olds have a higher crash rate than any other age group.

But according to the Professional Lawyer, Edgar Snyder of “PA Personal Injury Attorneys”, had studied that the average age of crash rates was 20-22 year olds.

Another piece of evidence that young drivers cause accidents by their own decisions is that in 2012, 71% of 15 to 20 year old drivers who died were killed by drinking and driving. Drinking and driving is their own decision. No one else can decide for them. Another piece of evidence is that 15 to 20 year old drivers that go into an accident, 37% were speeding and 25% were drinking and driving. So the one reason is that they get into crashes for their own choices.(Teen Driving Statistics, Geico). If we do raise the driving age that will give young drivers more time to mature and think about their choices and decisions.

Side: Proposition
1 point

Another reason why they should raise the driving age to 18 is that Young drivers are a risk to the community. For example, between 1995 and 2004, there were almost 30, 917 accidents caused by 15 to 17 year old drivers, according to the AAA. Also, according to the CDC, young drivers have costed $26 billion in injuries. $19 billion for males and $7 billion for females. So getting young drivers off the road for a little bit would do everyone some good.

Side: Proposition
1 point

I think the age should be raised because 16 year old's aren't as responsible as a 18 or 20 year old therefore 16 year old's are more likely to get in a car crash then anyone out of high school. Kids during high school don't fully get/ put together the fact that driving is serious. But when out of school, ( graduated) you more likely to know more about how it works and be more serious about it.

Side: Proposition
1 point

I believe that raising the driving age is a very good decision because people who are older than 16 will most likely be better drivers. Raising the driving age would teach teenagers that driving is a huge responsibility. Also, some states allow unsupervised 14 year old's to drive which is a very bad idea because 14 year old's are inexperienced and can't drive well. There are people in Congress sponsoring bills which set a minimum unrestricted driving age as 18. Which means the driving age would be set to, at the least, 18 years old. This would give the teens more experience in driving before they got out on busy roads where more people can get hurt. Raising the driving age would help other people as well as the teens because if teens are better at driving, they put themselves and others at a lower risk of being injured or dying. As a rule, when you have more experience in driving, you are going to be better at it have a very low probability of being injured. There are people here and there that don't pay attention and that would result in them getting punished by the police and having to practice driving even more. Therefore, you can either be good at driving before hand and be safe, or start driving earlier, get in trouble, and have to go work on driving even more.

Side: Proposition

I think the driving age should be raised to 18 years of age because teenagers are very immature.

Did you know that alcohol is a factor in many teen crashes? (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Teenagers: Driving carries extra risk for them, pg. 1) Also, 1 in 10 teenagers drink and drive. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention: Vital Signs, pg. 1) Finally, teenage drivers are 3 times as likely to crash than others 20 years or older because of speeding according to the IIHS.

Side: Proposition

Continuing on with teenage drivers being very dangerous, between 1995 and 2004, there was 30,917 deaths that were caused by 15-17 year old drivers on the road according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. This shows how dangerous not only teenagers are, but how dangerous teenagers are after they get the license.

Side: Proposition
1 point

Between 1995 and 2004, there were 30,917 fatalities in accidents that involved 15 to 17 year old drivers, according to a study by the AAA foundation for traffic safety. Around one third of the deaths were teen drivers themselves. The rest were pedestrians, passengers, and people in cars that teenage drivers struck.

Side: Proposition
1 point

There are many reasons towards why the driving age should be raised, as well as a lot of statistical numbers that show that the driving age should be raised. I truly believe the driving age should be raised not only to reduce the number of deaths that teenagers cause on the road, but to really make driving so much less scary than it is now. When you get on the road today, you don't know if you will make it to your destination safe and sound or damaged. If we raise the driving age, it will help our country for the better.

Side: Proposition

I think that the age of when teens get their drivers license at 18. 16 year olds are the most involved in highway car crashes than any other age due to immaturity and inexperience. One third of 16 year olds end up dead in crash. 16 year old drivers are the the most to die in crashes. 3 years in vietnam is equal to one year driving in the U.S.A, and if they raised the age to 18 the kids will be more mature. Now a days kids have phone so they have access to texting and driving and are at a higher risk f getting in a crash 5,000 16 year olds die in a car crash due to texting and driving.

You say that the driving age should be increased to 18 because kids brains are more fully developed at 18 rather than 16. But I say that either way, your brain isn't fully developed. According to npr.org, brains do not fully develop until age 25. Therefore, brains are not fully developed at age 16, nor age 18.

Teen drivers are reckless if a teenage driver is on the road with some friends the driver could get distracted and get all the passengers killed or if the teen driver is under the influence.

Side: Proposition

I think that the driving should be raised because lots of accidents happen every year. "16 year old's have more accidents per highway mile than any other age group," according to Raising Minimum Driving Age is Modest Statement said by John M. Crisp. This means that raising the driving age to 18 would maybe solve this problem of crashes.

Side: Proposition

The only reason why 16 year olds have the most accidents like it says in your evidence is because they are still getting used to the road. If the driving age was increased, 18 year olds would still crash and they would be killed in their crashes. This would not solve the problem of teens dying in car crashes, it would just delay it until they are older. In this case, raising the driving age would not help this situation, just simply make the chance of 18 year olds dying higher, rather than 16 year olds.

There is always a controversial issue on the subject "Should the driving age be raised?" I believe that the driving age should be raised to 18 years old for the following reasons.

First and foremost, teenagers are very unsafe when driving vehicles. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2011, about 2,650 teens in the United States between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed due to car accidents. As well as 292,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes all because of teenagers.

Do you think the driving age should be raised? I believe that the driving age should be raised to 18 for several reasons.

First of all, young drivers cause most of the accidents based on their own actions. For example, over 74,000 accidents have been caused by teens not wearing a seat belt.(Teen Driving Statistics, Geico)

Driving-Safty.net says that teen driving is deadly. 16 year olds are more likely to die in a car crash then a 30 year old because 16 year olds are momre distracted then 30 years. They found that 16 year olds are more likely to text and drive or go on their phone the 30 year olds.

Side: Proposition

Another reason why I think that the driving age should be raised is because it would overall be better for parents. According to Adrienne Mandel, a Maryland state legislator "Other delegates said, 'What are you doing? You're going to make me drive my kid to the movies on Friday night for another six months?' " Mandel says. "Parents are talking about inconvenience, and I'm talking about saving lives." Why do parents worry about things like that? When in reality which is better, driving your kids around for longer? Or, having your kid die early?

Side: Proposition

I believe that the driving age should be raised because it would be safer to be older than 16 while driving. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 16 year old's have more accidents per highway mile than any other age group. The average teenager is very attached to their phone which could lead to texting or calling while driving. Lots of teenagers are also in a hurry which could mean that they end up running red lights and disobeying simple laws. Some people say that raising the driving age wouldn't be necessary because anybody can get distracted and disobey laws but, teenagers are more likely to do that because they aren't as used to driving and they are most teens are more about their phones than safety.

The only reason that 16 year olds are the ones that have the most accidents is becasue they are the youngest ones driving. They have least amount of experience. If we increase it then it will only make the 18 year olds the ones with the most amount of accidents because now they are the youngest ones driving. With the least amount of experience. Yes when kids are 16 they are addicted to their phones but so are 18 year olds so then that won't help with that problem. 18 year olds would not be used to driving just like 16 year olds. So that means that switching the driving age to 18 would not make a difference.

Side: Opposition

I believe that the driving age should not be raised. The first reason why I believe this is because good driving is dependent on experience, not age. Despite what proposers of raising the driving age believe, changing the driving age to 18 will not save lives at the blink of an eye. Instead, it would just cause more 18 year olds to die, not 16 year olds. Think of yourself when you learned how to ride a bike. You started off out of control and wobbly, but overtime you mastered how to bike. That is exactly how driving is: the more you drive, the better you get. Therefore, the driving age should not be raised because good driving depends not age, so raising it would not help anything.

I agree with ellyn. A third reason to help, is that increasing the age won't affect the number of deaths that occur. If the age is increased to 18 then the amounts of deaths will increase for them and go down for 16 years old because they aren't driving any more. It will only delay deaths for a little bit and go back to normal with the inexperienced 18 year olds. Its really not what age they are, its what they chose to do themselves and their choices - according to the article should 16 year olds drive.

You say that raising the driving age would cause more 18 year old's to die. But I think that it would not happen like that. Because according to the article USA Today, "When a teen is traveling 15 to 20 miles per hour over the speed limit, the part of his or her brain that processes a thrill is working brilliantly. But the part that warns of negative consequences? It's all but useless." The part of the brain that controls this would be more developed at 18. It still would not be fully developed, though. That means the longer you wait to get your license the better your brain will be developed, and the better you will drive. Therefore, the higher the driving age is, the safer the roads will be.

If the driving age is raised to the age of 18 for example, just like 16 year olds, the 18 year olds death rate in driving would raise just like the 16 year olds, meaning raising the driving age would decrease the 16 year old death rate, but also increase the age the raise it too.

You say that raising the age to 18 would just increase the death rate of 18 year old's. But I say that it wouldn't be the 16 year old's fault if they did get in a crash. The weak link of the brain, what's called "the executive branch" of the teen brain the part that weighs risks, makes judgments and controls impulsive behavior is not yet fully developed. "Scientists at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md., have found that this vital area develops through the teenage years and isn't fully mature until age 25. One 16-year-old's brain might be more developed than another 18-year-old's, just as a younger teen might be taller than an older one. But evidence is mounting that a 16-year-old's brain is generally far less developed than those of teens just a little older. That's the part of the brain that helps look farther ahead," According to the article USA Today. This means that if you wait until they are just a little bit older, like 18, the brain can be more developed and ready to handle driving.

Side: Proposition

I do not think that the driving age should be raised. My first reason is that even if the driving age is increased, the new drivers still have the same experience, no matter what their age is. Studies show that most crashes occur because of inexperience, but both 16 and 18 year olds are new to this whole "driving thing," so they would get in crashes either way. Several sources show that your brain is not fully developed until your early twenties. So either way, 16 or 18, the brain is not fully developed and the teenager would take just as long to understand everything about driving, and they would still get in car crashes from not fully understanding what to do. Therefore, teaching the kids how to drive when they are younger will help them to be better drivers in the future, and the driving age should not be increased.

Side: Opposition
3 points

I agree with paige because one reason why the driving age should not be increased its because it won't make a difference because if you teach them when they are 18 then it would be the same as if you are teaching them when they are 16. Kids need to be taught a lesson when they are at a younger age. A piece of evidence to support that is from the article Driving age should not be increased, saying “The fact of the matter is driving is based on experience and making good choices, not age.” This is showing that it really doesn't matter if you change the driving age because it isn't based on the age. It is mostly from the decisions that are made and also the experience that they have. So there would be no point in changing the driving age.

Side: Opposition
4 points

Also raising the driving age because other 16 year old are getting in accidents is unfair. For example, if your neighbor gets in trouble, and he is the age of 16, should all 16 year old's get in trouble? Np, because not all 16 year old's are irresponsible. It is unfair to increase the age because other 16 year old aren't responsible to drive the right way.

Side: Opposition
4 points

I believe that driving is not only dangerous to 16 year old, it is dangerous to all ages. Driving-Safety said that the leading cause of death for 15-24 year old's is auto accidents but also can be dangerous for all ages over 4, meaning no mater how old the driving age is it won't change the death rate.

Side: Opposition
3 points

Ellyn says that raising the driving age would not save 18 year old people. It would just cause more death for 18 year old teenagers than 16 year old teenagers. Instead, I would like to disagree. If teenagers started their driving program when they were 15 years old and were able to drive with no restrictions when they were 18 years old, they would be actually more safe than just having one year of driving school. Instead, they would have 2 or maybe even 3 years of driving school, which would prepare them even more for the real world and what it is like to drive for real. Therefore, I think that 18 year old teenagers would be more safe driving than 16 year old teenagers.

Side: Opposition
3 points

Paige says that both 16 and 18 year old drivers are new to driving and that they would get into crashes anyways. But I disagree, that 2 year gap from 16 to 18 gives the brain more time to develop. Also, it gives teens more time to mature and make better choices like not drinking and driving and using a seatbelt. Therefore, raising the driving age would make a difference so teens can become more mature and make better decisions.

Side: Opposition

Another reason that can support my thinking to why the driving age should not be increased is that when kids are 16 they need places to go and the only way to help that is to be able to drive at that age. Most kids get a job at about the age 16 and their parents don't have the time to drive them to those jobs or anything like that. The article, Should driving age be raised to 18 it states how kids are usually getting a job at 16 and they want to drive themselves. Another important thing to remember is also that if kids can't make it to their jobs, they won’t have one. If they don't have a job then they won't learn to work hard when they are younger which will really affect how they act when they are older. Letting them drive when they are 16 will really help in the future for them.

Although are teens who make bad decisions, most of the car accidents are caused by 20-22 year old's. Therefore the driving age should not be raised.

When teenager fill their gas, go to their arrival on time, and arrive safely it can show that the teen is responsible. Like what the article "The Herald" had studied, 'Teens Who Drive, Show Responsibility'. If they drive safely, they can manage to live on their own and start a life on their own without their parents.

I do not think that the driving age should be increased because 18 year olds are the same or more likely to get in an accident. "If you don’t teach 16 year olds how to drive later they will not be more experienced." "18 year olds are more likely to drink than 16 year olds," both by Driving age should not be raised. My 2nd reason is Parents may not have the time to drive. If a 16 year old needs to get home and can’t drive then then a parent needs to pick them up and sometime they can’t because they are busy Driving age should not be raised, by Driving age should not be raised. Also Amy Pfeiler has been the family chauffeur for a long time, driving her kids to everything from sports practices and voice lessons to after-school jobs. But with her youngest child finally on the verge of getting a license, she can see the end in sight, by Raise driving age? Parents not thrilled, By John Keilman and Grace Aduroja. They might say they are Irresponsible but I say they are just as responsible. 16 year olds are actually more competent than 18 year olds, says Driving age should not be raised. most teens demonstrate the maturity and knowledge of safety on the road, says Do you think the driving age should be raised? So the next time your 16 year old wants a drivers license or a car remember this argument, and you will see that 16 is the right time to drive.

Side: Opposition

Another reason why the driving age should not be increased is because it would make it a lot more complicated for parents. Many students are included in clubs and sports that they need to get to every night, and if the driving age is increased, 16 and 17 year olds will not be able to get themselves there. According to a study done by The Bureau of Labor Statistics, 59% of kids have 2 parents that work. This means that over half of kids would not have anyone to bring them places if they could not themselves. Not only would they miss out on sports, they would also miss out on things like parties and dances. These are important parts of a teens social life, and raising a driving age takes all of this away from them, which is something I do not think is good to do.

According to Teen Ink, the main reason why 16 year old's death rate is high in auto accident is due to inexperience, meaning no matter how high they raise the age, drivers within the first year will be inexperienced causing more crashes.

Side: Opposition

Another reason why I think that the driving age should not be raised is because it would complicate parents schedules. If the driving age was raised, how would teens get to their activities? Sports practices? Dates? Parents would end up having to be their kids chauffeur and would have to cart them everywhere because their kids wouldn't have their license. Also, a study done by www.heraldonline.com shows that many parents say that handing the car keys over to their teen is a great convenience. Although the stress of worrying about accidents is still always there, parents admit that it is a relief that their kids can drive themselves to where they want to/need to go. Also, think about working parents, how would they bring their kids to these activities? Most of them would be unable to bring their children everywhere so that might lead to less-involved teens. Who would want that? As you can see, raising the driving age would not have any positive effects and would really complicate parents schedules.

You may say that that more 18 year olds will get killed instead of 16 year olds and it really doesn't matter if you raise the age or not. I disagree because 18 year olds dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is developed or more developed than teens that are 16 which helps with decision making which can relate to the decisions made while driving a vehicle.

According to drive-safely.net, teens who are in vehicle crashes tend to improve on their driving. If the teen is in an accident, the teenagers shock will usually help them improve on what they had messed up on and become better drivers.
